Everyone loves receiving a card. Whether it is for a birthday, Christmas or just to say you mean something to me. When you receive a handmade card, it means so much more. Kids love making cards for others and it can be very therapeutic for adults. Why not go one step further and make a pop-up card? It adds to the excitement of the card. Here is how to make a basic pop-up card.
What You Need To Make A Pop-up Card
- 3 sheets of card
- Scissors
- glue
- Pens
- Things to decorate your card such as stickers/glitter (optional)
How To Make It
- To start you need to take one of your pieces of card. Fold the card in half.
- Cut some slits in the card. You need to decide how many pop-up elements you want. For each element, you will need 2 slits of 5cm and they should be approximately 1 cm apart. I am making a card for my mum, so I have made 6 slits to make 3 pop-up elements.
- Once the slits are made, you should be able to push them through so that the card folds onto them.
- Then you need to glue your 2nd sheet of card to the outside of your card. This will cover up the holes made by the slits. I have chosen to use the same colour card on the inside and the outside however you can use contrasting colours if you wish.
- Now you need to decide what you want to pop-up. Using your last piece of card, cut out either letters or pictures that you want to pop-up. I would recommend a contrasting colour for this bit. I have chosen to use the letters to spell out mum.
- Now you simply glue your letters or pictures to the pop-up slits. You may need to leave your card to dry before closing it.
- The last thing to do is decorate the front of your card. I have used stickers, but you can use pens or glitter instead.
Variation To The Pop-Up Card
There are a few variations to make your card even more special and unique. Although I have made my card to open upwards, you can just as easily make it open sideways and have the pop-up elements one underneath another.
A second variation could be making the different pop-up elements different in size. This can be done by making the slits different sizes. This would be brilliant if you wanted to add more focus on a particular letter or picture.
